BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE AIRPORT
Very Important: Check your flight status before proceeding
to the airport by calling the airline directly or checking their
website. Passengers are urged to arrive at the airport at least
two hours before scheduled departure for domestic flights, and at
least two-and-one-half hours before international flights.
TIPS FOR TRAVEL UNDER INCREASED SECURITY
The airlines have worked closely with the Federal Aviation Administration
to ensure that airport facilities and aircraft meet all security
requirements, thus changing the previous. airport security screening
procedures. As you prepare to travel under heightened security measures,
please use the following guidelines to ensure the best travel experience.
AIRPORT SECURITY
The Federal Aviation Administration now requires you to have a
photo ID and a printed passenger receipt or paper ticket for travel.
Examples of acceptable identification include a government issued
photo identification card, driver's license or passport.
ENSURING YOUR PACKING IS COMPLIANT WITH NEW RULES
Carry-on luggage is limited to one bag plus one of the following
personal items: a purse, briefcase, laptop computer or small backpack.
Other items allowed include: coats or wraps, safety seats and diaper
bags for ticketed or lap children, books or newspapers, small bags
of food for travel and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers,
oxygen, etc. Passengers exceeding the carry-on limit will not be
allowed through the security checkpoint. Certain items cannot be
packed in carry-ons, including: Knives of any length, cutting instruments
of every kind (metallic or non-metallic), such as carpet knives,
box cutters and other folding or retractable blades, regardless
of size. Ice picks, straight razors, any kind of scissors, knitting
needles, tweezers, any sharp or pointed item, aerosol cans, shave
cream, hair spray. (Safety/disposable razors such as Bic and Gillette
are allowed.) Avoid over-packing so that carry-on luggage and checked
suitcases can be opened and closed with ease.
UPON ARRIVAL AT AIRPORT
Terminal parking has been restricted to designated areas only.
Unattended vehicles are banned near the terminals and will be towed.
Consider using an airport shuttle service. Curbside check-in has
resumed at most of the 80 domestic airports where it's available.
Aircraft security will be completing thorough sweeps of airport
properties. Expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement
personnel outside and inside the terminal building.
AT THE SECURITY CHECKPOINT
Access beyond security is now restricted to passengers and employees
only. Have your ticket paperwork for the current travel date available,
along with your photo ID. You will not be permitted past the security
check-in area without these documents. Be prepared to demonstrate
the operation of electronic equipment such as laptops, cell phones,
etc. Be aware that all passengers are subject to physical search:
random searches, either through the use of "wands" or "pat down"
methods at the security checkpoint and gate, will be ongoing, and
include checking footwear.
AT THE GATE
Maintain your sense of awareness and keep your possessions with
you at all times. Expect to see law-enforcement personnel and dogs.
Keep your ticket paperwork and identification on hand and readily
available. Expect to see teams of individuals board the aircraft
before general passenger boarding in order to sweep the aircraft
as an added security precaution.
ONBOARD THE AIRCRAFT
Expect to see random searches of service personnel, flight crews,
and equipment. Be patient if your departure is delayed. The ground
handling crew is carefully coordinating passenger boarding and baggage
loading.
UPON ARRIVAL AT YOUR DESTINATION
Have your luggage receipts available for verification when retrieving
luggage.
